In 2006 a small music festival began in Austin’s Waterloo Park. It was aimed at the city’s alternative music scene and headlined by Austin’s own psych rockers, The Black Angels. Nine years later, Fun Fun Fun Fest has grown to become one of the premiere independent music festivals in the country, attracting international acts and attention. At a special event Monday night, the festival’s producers, Transmission Events, revealed this year’s lineup. And you may want to remember to bring your earplugs.
The 2014 Fun Fun Fun Fest lineup features a medley of heavy metal and punk, with legendary acts such as Judas Priest, King Diamond, Dinosaur Jr. and Rocket from the Crypt. Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine, Sick of It All, Amon Amarth, Black Lips and Glassjaw are also bringing the noise.
Here at KUTX we’re happy to say that we are again the official media sponsor for the festival! As we get closer to the big event you’ll hear hand-picked tunes from the event’s performers and some highlights from last year’s FFF8. And like last year, we’re going to be on-site with everyone sharing some of the 3-day music festival live on 98.9 and streaming on our dot-org.
This year’s fest also features mega indie groups, Death Cab for Cutie and Neutral Milk Hotel. There are beloved acts New Pornographers, Yo La Tengo and City and Colour. And there plenty of Pitchfork-approved darlings such as Alt-J, Dum Dum Girls, Sun Kil Moon and Julianna Barwick.
Fun Fun Fun Fest is often heralded for its hop-hop lineup and this year is no exception. Nas, who is celebrating the Illmatic’s 20th anniversary, is headlining. Other rap artists include Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz and Atmosphere.
Austin Music is represented with The Sour Notes, The Digital Wild, Dana Falconberryand more. And there are a few acts in the lineup that may surprise you, like 90s R&B sensation- Ginuwine.
The location of this year’s fest was up in the air for several months due to therenovation of its recent home of Auditorium Shores. But the fest is returning to the shores of Lady Bird Lake November 7-9.
The Fun Fun Fun comedy and action sports lineups will be announced at a later date but tickets to the fest go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m.. Festival producers say they hope to bring out about 18,000 people a day.
