Best of Studio 1A: February 2022

As always, we had a busy month here in Studio 1A. We know you’re busy too, so in case you missed any of the incredible musicians that blessed us with their presence here at the station here’s a little sampler of Studio 1As from February 2022!

Chief Cleopatra is creating a special brand of pensive soul that has her name written all over it. Self-reflective and tender, her music swirls through the air, with crisp guitars lying just under the floating reverb. The band follows her intuitively as she skips around the scale, never missing a note.

Born Jalesa Jessie, Chief Cleopatra began releasing music in 2019 with her first EP, Lesa x Lenny Vol.1. She’s been hard at work ever since, as she has already caught the attention of SXSW, who featured Cleo as an official artist in 2021, and the Austin Chronicle.

Passionate about analog sound design, Urban Heat’s Jonathan Horstmann is developing a sound both fresh and full of nostalgia. The band’s synthwave-meets-proto-punk sound exists at the crossroads of man and machine, an unrelenting pulse slamming into the inherent imperfections of human performance. Horstmann sings of romanticism against the stark backdrop of today’s machine future.

Along with multi-instrumentalists Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley, Horstmann began releasing music as Urban Heat in late 2019. The band has found a following through social media, where Horstmann shares song ideas and synth sketches with a community of like-minded fans from around the world.
