Since his 2017 debut, Cimafunk has been attracting fans outside of his native Cuba with hard-hitting funk jams and electrifying stage shows. His cimarrón heritage (fugitive slaves who settled in the wild to lead a free life in Cuba) empowers his Afro-Cuban mix of funky grooves, but he also takes a little from George Clinton’s diasporic funk from here in the States. In short, the last 500 years of Afro-Caribean-American history led us to this wonderful moment where we can all dance to Cimafunk together.
We’ve had the honor of hanging out with Cimafunk for a few SXSW now. Most recently, Cimafunk and The Tribe brought the dance party to historic Studio 6a, the former home of Austin City Limits, for a live broadcast during SXSW 2022. And tonight, he’ll be performing at Austin City Limits TV season 48 taping! https://acl-live.com/taping/cimafunk
