In 2023, Amy Ray has very little to prove. As one-half of the Georgia folk-rock duo Indigo Girls, she and her musical partner Emily Saliers have made a strong mark on popular music with their unparalleled harmonies and songwriting, leaving a trail of excellent albums and sold-out concerts in their wake for more than 35 years.

But somehow that hasn’t been enough for Amy Ray. Beginning in 2001, Ray has recorded seven studio albums for her own Daemon Records, the latest of which, 2022’s If It All Goes South features her roots-rocking band and guests including Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, The Highwomen’s Natalie Hemby, Phil Cook, and I’m With Her. In the interview above Amy explains why she also chooses to follow a solo path (as does Saliers) to go along with the Indigos, and about the creation of If It All Goes South. And, by the way, her concert with fellow Georgian Kevn Kinney at Stubb’s was inspiring and took her new songs to an even higher level!
