Houston-born pianist Jason Moran is not only one of the most adventurous and forward-thinking minds in jazz but in all of music, yet he continually mines the past. His latest show is all about WWI-era pioneer James Reese Europe and his Harlem Hellcats, a huge band that introduced war-torn Europe to American jazz. His Austin show is Friday 11/5 at the McCullough Theatre on the University of Texas campus. Here’s my interview with Jason. -Jeff McCord
