Melbourne native Angie McMahon stopped by Studio 1A ahead of the release of her debut album Salt on Friday out on Dualtone Records. Although she started out as a member of an eight-piece soul band in Australia, McMahon always wanted to perform solo but took a few years to gain the songwriting chops and stage confidence to stand on her own.

Taking the time might have been the right decision because at her first SXSW this past March she was rewarded with the coveted Grulke Prize for Best Developing International Act, a recognition previously given to her Australian contemporary Courtney Barnett as well as Jade Bird and CHVRCHES.

Although quite soft-spoken in conversation, McMahon is another force when given a guitar and a microphone. Hear her sing a few songs off her upcoming debut before she plays the Newport Folk Festival this weekend and opens for Hozier on his fall tour.
