Asleep at the Wheel, American country music legends, have had quite a long and prolific career, and they’re still going strong today. Though they formed in Paw Paw, West Virginia in 1969, these days, they are based right here in Austin. Founded by Ray Benson and Lucky Oceans (Reuben Gosfield), the band has had a rotating slew of talented members throughout the years, and they have racked up an impressive amount of accolades. They have released more than 20 albums, have charted more than 20 singles on the Billboard country charts, and have performed on the Austin City Limits program a record number of 10+ times. Amidst all of this, they have also shown a deep appreciation for music legend Bob Wills, a major inspiration for the band, and have released two tribute albums and, eventually, a Bob Wills musical in 2005.
The 9-time Grammy award winners are the subject of a documentary film, “Then and Now,” which premieres September 8th at The Long Center and will be followed by a full concert. Basically what we’re saying is that this band is awesome, but you already knew that! They were in our studio for a stellar live performance on Thursday – take a listen!
