Cinema is Back: Como Las Movies Returns to Studio 1A

Como Las Movies is joined by Sabrina Ellis in Studio 1A

Cosmic twins Nelson Valente Aguilar and Sabrina Ellis stepped into a crowded Studio 1A, splitting the sea of eager Austinites in order to get to the stage. Como Las Movies, a staple of the Austin live music scene since 2013, featured guest star Ellis for their new single “La 6.” But you wouldn’t be able to tell they haven’t been there since the beginning by the way their sound melds with the band on their brand new album Como Las Singles. They float on the synth driven song, telling a story of heartbreak and loss, joyfully asking for a hug before the world ends.

Como Las Movies is back after their long awaited break forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Laredo born musicians, who corral their sound into the self-made genre of indie-cumbia-pop project, make their border town roots known in the second song they shared with those lucky enough to be in Studio 1A. “Am I Cumbia? Yes, I Am.” answers its own question with the complex percussion and bass groove supporting the harmonizing guitars, wailing into the studio. The song is only available on vinyl, hammering in the “indie” half of the indie-cumbia, and reinforcing the idea that the song isn’t meant to be heard from you headphones, but driven into your head at a live show.
