What happens when a talented guitar-playing rocker pairs up with an experimental electronic producer? The answer to that equation is magic, and that magic goes by the name of, Darkside. Dave Harrington started as a bass player and apprentice of experimental jazz music in New York. He eventually moved to composing and performance art, incorporating keyboard, lap steel, and guitar into his repertoire. By 2011 he had paired up with, Nicolas Jaar, a scenester in the underground minimal techno scene who had released a string of dance singles that brought him some notoriety. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, the two musicians began exploring their collaborative efforts, a fusion of psychedelic rock and electronic dance music. The end result is something unique and progressive and greater than the sum of its parts. The duo released Psychic. Matador Records says this about the album, “At any given moment, Psychic encompasses the ritualistic structures and methodologies of krautrock, the cosmic exploration of classic space-rock, and the immersive, body-moving transcendence of 21st century house and techno—but, working with the finishing-each-others’-sentences fluidity of kindred spirits, Dave and Nico synthesize it all into a living, breathing whole. Darkside are deep listeners and creators.” Check out Darkside’s recording session with us right here!
