Girl Ultra’s Return

blush stakes out new territory

By Jeff McCord

Mexico’s Mariana de Miguel (aka Girl Ultra), on tour for her latest EP,  blush, appeared at this year’s Levitation Fest.

Staking her claim over the years with her fluid blend of pop, rock and club music, she keeps the surprise elements bubbling up.

It’s not our first time to see Girl Ultra in action. Her guest appearance was a standout on Adrian Quesada’s acclaimed Boleros Psicodélicos project, and in 2023, she appeared at SXSW  (and on stage at our Scholz’s morning broadcasts).

Recorded in Mexico City, blush pushes her music into even edgier territory.  There’s a raw vibe to the sound and the emotions within. Hints of the experimental side of Bjork, and the hard electronic splices of Dean Blunt, push her sound into new sonic territory. Hip hop, house, even cumbia dot the landscape.

Assertive and unexpected, blush has all the feelings of a new chapter for this fascinating artist.
