Midlake 11.27.21

Michael Minasi

It was a time for new beginnings for both KUTX and Denton, TX’s Midlake the last time they were in Studio 1A back in 2013. That year we had just left KUT’s nest for our maiden flight on our own frequency 98.9FM, and Midlake had just lost their original frontman during the recording of their fourth album. They pressed on, refreshing their lineup and taking a more collaborative approach to songwriting for the recordings that would become Antiphon.

Soon after their reimagined lineup’s debut, the group would go on extended hiatus, but their fifth record For the Sake of Bethel Woods is on the way due to reach your ears early next year. Working with Grammy award-winning, and always-in-demand producer, John Congleton, the record covers the lives lived together and apart over Midlake’s seven years apart. In their own words: “Loss Loss and hope, isolation and communion, the cessation and renewal of purpose. Timeless and salient, these themes echo throughout [For the Sake of Bethel Woods].”

Check out their Studio 1A performance below in case you missed them during their residency at 3Ten, or even if you did and just can’t get enough. For the Sake of Bethel Woods is out 3/18/22 on Bella Union.
