San Fansisco’s Monophonics create a timeless combination of psych and soul.
Formed in 2005 and featuring Kelly Finnigan on keys and vocals, Austin Bohlman on drums, Myles O’Mahony groovin’ on bass and backing vocals, Ian McDonald on guitar and backing vocals, and Ryan Scott on trumpet, background vocals, and percussion, Monophonics meld the classic sounds of Northern soul, doo-wop, rock and roll, psych pop, with a touch of the Western. The band’s latest and fourth album, Sound of Sinning, was just released in April and displays a broader range of influences including a turn towards the psychedelic sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Each of the album’s songs unwind off the back of its electrified strings and ivories, creating full body grooves with blasts of trumpet, a Greek chorus of soulful backing vocals, and Finnigan’s sharp voice cutting through with a sense of urgency and anguish.
