Old Settler’s 2014

KUTX is proud to present exclusive live recordings, captured in the scenic Hill Country at Old Settler’s Music Festival 2014! We’ll post the songs below as we get them in–keep checking back! If the below songs aren’t quite enough for you, check out our YouTube page. There are some great “backstage” performances too.

Shinyribs

While the Gourds are on hiatus, frontman Kevin Russell has donned the Shinyribs persona. Cajun, blues, rock, folk, country–nothing is off-limits for Shinyribs. As Russell himself calls his sound: “Salvador Dolly Parton.” Check out “Heard It On The X” in the player below!

Sarah Jarosz

Three Grammy nominations. A degree from the prestigious New England Conservatory of music. Worldwide acclaim, both from critics and her folk peers. Not bad for a twenty-two year old. Sarah Jarosz rocketed out of nearby Wimberley in 2009, and since she’s become a folk sensation. Her music does the impossible–it draws together both folk purists and a new generation of listeners. Check out “Build Me Up From Bones”  and “Gone Too Soon” in the player below!

John Fullbright

Growing up just down the road of Woody Guthrie’s Oklahoma birthplace, John Fullbright has soaked up folk tradition while adding his own irreverent spin to the genre. His 2012 debut From The Ground Up earned him a Grammy nomination, and it’s his originals–like the spiritually ambiguous “Gawd Above”–that are drawing fans around the world to his songwriting. Check out “Happy” and “Until You Were Gone” in the player below!

Lake Street Dive

Boston’s Lake Street Dive first gained attention as street musicians, performing raucous covers for lookers-on. Videos of these performances went viral, but the band hit a bigger spotlight recently with a buzzed-about slot on The Colbert Report. The “Colbert Bump” has certainly increased their profile, as has the release of Bad Self Portaits, a record that blends roots, jazz, and soul into a unique whole. Check out “Stop Your Cryin'” and “Bad Self Portraits” in the player below!

Della Mae

When Boston’s Della Mae formed in 2009, there weren’t many all-female bluegrass bands out there. The members came together from all over the country–Vermont, South Carolina, Colorado, Wyoming, and Washington–and united in musical harmony. The U.S. State Department even named Della Mae as America’s cultural ambassadors in 2011. The group toured Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and now they’re back in Austin for Old Settler’s. Check out “Empire” in the player below!

Devil Makes Three

Santa Cruz’s Devil Makes Three blends acoustic roots music with the energy of garage rock. Since forming in 2002, the band has crisscrossed the country, touring with Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris. Their latest album, I’m A Stranger Here, was produced by Buddy Miller (Robert Plant’s Band of Joy, Patty Griffin). Check out “Hallelu” and “40 Days” in the player below!

Front Country

From San Francisco comes Front Country, a band that calls itself “progressive bluegrass.” They’re winning fans all over the country, nabbing top honors at festivals like RockyGrass and Telluride. Check out “One Kind Word” in the player below!
