Brazilian psychedelic rock band Os Mutantes were without a doubt the pioneers of the genre in their home country when they were founded in 1966. But their influence isn’t limited to their home country. Artists like Kurt Cobain, David Byrne, Beck, Devendra Banhart, and The Flaming Lips all cite Os Mutantes as influential on their music. Frontman Sérgio Dias reassembled the band in 2008 after having another taste of the band on a reunion tour. In 2009, they released their first album of new material in 25 years. They’ve got another album due to be released near the end of this month. Fool Metal Jack is their first album to feature primarily English lyrics.
Os Mutantes are set to play Austin Psych Fest this weekend. While they’re in town, they’ll visit Studio 1a to play live on KUTX on Saturday at 3pm. Be sure to listen in!
