Under The Rug in Studio 1A

Michael Minasi

Parting is such sweet sorrow

If you’re new to the alt-folk sounds of Under the Rug, well, so are we! Their latest album, happiness is easy 🙂, was released this past August and introduced us to the band—but they’ve been gaining loyal fans with their DIY aesthetic and consistent touring since their first release in 2019.

Faced with a choice between Austin and Atlanta, the band opted for ATX in 2020 when their studio in LA was shut down during the pandemic. Now, after nearly five years in the “Live Music Capital of the World,” they’re making a move to Oregon—a decision they weren’t particularly eager to make but felt was necessary. “I think there are some complications or difficulties, with me in particular, being here as a trans person in Texas. So we’re headed westward,” says vocalist Casey Dayan. “My day-to-day might have a little less friction, which sounds like something I could use at the moment.”

Typically a five-piece (they hire two musicians for touring), Under the Rug stripped down to its founding members—lyricist Casey Dayan, guitarist Sean Campbell, and pianist Brendan McQueeney—for their final performance as Austinites. They even shared a brand-new, unreleased song.

We wish them much success in Oregon and hope to see them in Studio 1A, full band in tow, next time they tour through Austin.
