Wishy’s Controlled Chaos

The band plays Austin supporting their debut, Triple Seven

By Jeff McCord

While the opener on Wishy’s latest album, Triple Seven, kicks off like a 90s alternative joy ride, there are lots of twists and throttles before you reach the end. And for Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites, that’s just the way they want it.

Triple Seven, their full-length debut, keeps things on the edgy side, yet power pop, shoegaze, and Elizabeth Fraser-like ethereals all swirl around the mix.

“Why can’t we combine everything we want to hear?”,  the pair have previously asked out loud. Hey, it’s their  band.

Though acquainted since high school, Krauter and Pitchkites didn’t reunite in Indianapolis until years later, after travels and various musical projects. They both worshipped at the My Bloody Valentine altar, but also found they had enough divergent interests to keep their writing distinct and interesting.

The pair, both guitarists, rounded out their band (initially called Mana) with guitarist Dimitri Morris, bassist Mitch Collins and drummer Conner Host.

And for Triple Seven, focus seems paramount. There’s abandon, but it’s a tightly controlled chaos. And while the title conjures images of Vegas payoffs, it’s actually about something equally hard to achieve.  “It’s an angel number that symbolizes spiritual awakening and knowing one’s self,” according to Pitchkites.

Lofty goals for a debut album, but Wishy seem to have little holding them back.
