Happy New Year! Let’s get back into the swing of new music, country style. Bassist, singer-songwriter, and arranger Ali Cook is behind the Austin-based modern string outfit Ali and the Wild Geese (filled out by Will Manning, Tony Perez, Chase Borne, and Daniel Benoit). And in the lead-up to their debut album Next, out this Friday, they’ve set aside the semantics of genres and let “modern string band” be whatever they want it to be, even song to song.
“Bad Detective” showcases the bluesier, country swing plumes of the Wild Geese, with solos from Manning and Perez on guitar and violin respectively. But with Cook’s arrangement, each member shines through. The story’s whir of a journey through the fruitless effort of trying to answer the question, “where did it all go wrong?” is embellished by the song’s own whir of time signature changes and quick solo exchanges.
