Bayonne: “Waves” (Live In Studio 1A)

All this week, the Song of the Day highlights Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015 artists.

For years, Roger Sellers had a split musical personality. The San Marcos artist started out as something of a Sufjan Stevens disciple, releasing a few albums’ worth of home-recorded acoustic songs. His live shows, though, are something else entirely. Using a loop pedal, Sellers builds his songs by layering piano, clattering percussion, and his voice, resulting in kinetic, vaguely psychedelic electro-pop.

A few months ago, Sellers decided these divergent personas were too much to keep under one name. The acoustic songs will be released as Roger Sellers, and for his more electronic songs, he’s going by Bayonne. It’s a nod back to the street he grew up on in Spring, Texas, and he still writes and records in that house. Early next year, Mom + Pop will re-release his 2014 album Primitives, which Sellers showed off for us last year in Studio 1A. The live version of “Waves” is a pure symphony of sound, starting small before exploding in a big way. Download the song below.
