Chipper Jones: “Tropics”

Free Week is a great time to get reacquainted with the sheer amount of good music we have in town. Case in point: this year’s most eclectic lineup–dubbed Free For Y’all–takes over Fair Market this weekend. The Saturday bill features the gumbo funk of Shinyribs alongside Holiday Mountain’s spazzy dance party; pop-folksters the Deer with Aaron Behren’s electro-glam alter-ego the Midnight Stroll. In short, there’s a flavor for everyone.

Austin’s Chipper Jones is definitely one act to take note of. Bonus points to the duo for going the ’90s nostalgia route in the name department, but the band charts unusual territory. Their songs are complex instrumentals built around mazes of guitar loops and interlocking rhythms. “Tropics,” from Chipper Jones’ 2015 EP Tropics/COSM, is a labyrinth of sound, weaving in Afrobeat, post-rock, and even metal influences. Download the song below and catch Chipper Jones in action on Saturday at Fair Market, where they take the stage at 6 p.m. RSVP here.
