Communist Daughter’s elemental, textural folk-rock comes from patience and persistence. Across the last decade, frontman Johnny Solomon has been a fixture in the Twin Cities music scene, first with his band Friends Like These. But he’s also suffered through addiction and mental health problems. Treatment gave him a fresh start, and so did Communist Daughter. The band has become a way to exorcise those demons.
“Roll A Stone” builds on Solomon’s past; just the song title alone intimates how arduous recovery can be. But Solomon has help in the form of his bandmates. Together, Communist Daughter finds a little bit of peace through the song’s orchestral beauty and martial momentum.
“Roll A Stone” appears on The Cracks That Built The Wall, out October 21.
