All this week, the Song of the Day features artists playing this Saturday at Pachanga Fest.
On their own, Camilo Lara and Toy Selectah love to blur genres. Under the name Mexican Institute of Sound, Lara exploded out of Mexico City in 2004, merging traditional samples with hip-hop beats and electronic flourishes. Toy Selectah leaned towards the dance end, becoming an in-demand DJ all around the world. Lara and Selectah have collaborated with everyone from the Beastie Boys and Morrissey to Eminem and Vampire Weekend, but now they’re appearing together as Compass. The project offers a chance to not only merge their own sounds together but also get ideas from a huge range of guests. The forthcoming Compass album features dozens of artists, including Toots & the Maytals, Gogol Bordello, Cypress Hill, and more. Listen to “Te Andan Buscando” below.
