Early on, people sensed there was something special about Dan Croll. Not long after earning admission to Liverpool’s prestigious Institute for the Performing Arts, he was tapped as the UK’s Songwriter of the Year, winning a one-on-one with that most famous Liverpudlian, Sir Paul himself. A few singles started trickling out in 2013, turning heads for their mix of pop and soul. The Guardian likened the sound to “Paul Simon jamming with Prince.”
High praise indeed, but Croll is taking it all in stride. This year saw the long-awaited release of his debut LP, Sweet Disarray. The record finds him continuing his freewheeling sound, pulling from a wide palette of pop sounds to create something heartfelt and danceable. Croll recently stopped by KUTX’s Studio 1A to play a few songs from his album. Even in a stripped-down format, a track like “From Nowhere” stands out with its strong melody and wistful air.
Catch Dan Croll Wednesday, April 30 at the Parish at 9pm.
