Deer Fellow: “Hues”

Michael McKinney

Following their 2021 EP and some breadcrumbed singles, Austin indie-folk duo Deer Fellow are releasing their debut full-length album Hues on May 29th. But it hasn’t just been music released into the void. In the last five years, the duo have been Sonic Guild grantees, SXSW official artists, and, most recently, members Matt Salois and Alyssa Kelly have gotten married.

The album’s title track was inspired by the soft, hypnotic shifting color mechanics of the 2016 puzzle game Hue. Delicate yet deep, the song’s reflective nature is cinematically underscored by Kelly’s violin bed layered with Salois’s catchy riff that perfectly captures the process of a guitarist who does their best thinking while plucking.

Deer Fellow’s album release show is Saturday, May 30th at Hole In the Wall with Magnolia Kids and Sophie Seng.
