Emily Wells grew up in a religious household in Amarillo, and that upbringing still runs right through the heart of her music. Using her voice, a violin, and a looping pedal, she constructs entire cathedrals of sound, spinning ghostly melodies from the intricate layers. Wells’s songs are many things at once: devotional, classical, experimental.
This combination may sound stuffy, but Wells’s latest album, Promise, is earthy and impassioned. These are fully-formed songs, full of interesting twists and turns. “Come To Me” starts out airy and dreamy before shifting into a clattering, percussion-led sing-along. Download the song below, and catch Emily Wells tomorrow night at Stubb’s indoors. Doors at 9 p.m.
