Doug Sahm has long held sway over Austin. From “She’s About A Mover” and “Groover’s Paradise” to the Armadillo World Headquarters and his Uncle Tupelo team-up, Sahm’s career is so far-reaching and weird that it would make for a hell of a movie. Joe Nick Patoski thinks so, too. The longtime Austinite made his directorial debut at SXSW back in March with Sir Doug And The Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove, a documentary that traces Sahm’s outsized shadow. A recently-successful Kickstarter campaign means the film will open to the broader world this fall with the hopes that the momentum will get Sahm a place in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Patoski–alongside Colin Gilmore and Harvest Thieves–stopped by Studio 1A last week to pay tribute to Sahm. Like Harvest Thieves, I originally got tipped to “Give Back The Key To My Heart” courtesy of Uncle Tupelo, who sang the song with Sahm himself on their Austin-recorded album Anodyne. Download Harvest Thieves’ cover below, and catch the band at Holy Mountain on Thursday, August 6. Doors at 9 p.m.
