Born and bred in Gothenburg, Jens Lekman has been called Sweden’s finest storyteller. Whether it’s about posing as the boyfriend of a lesbian friend to appease her parents or presenting a waitress with a 3D-model of a tumor, Lekman’s ability to add a tasteful sense of humor to stories others might turn sad or macabre has become his signature.
“Evening Prayer” is about the latter, a meditation on a peculiar kind of relationship we’ve all found ourselves in: the one that makes you ask yourself, “am I close enough to this person to care this much?” Sonically, the song is simple and catchy, proving a little bit of groove can go a long way. It’s a departure from Lekman’s typical indie-a-la-Belle-and-Sebastian vibe, leaving the honey-coated vocals while bumping-up the tempo and still tasting uniquely like Lekman.
“Evening Prayer” appears on Life Will See You Now, out now via Secretly Canadian. Jens Lekman plays live in our Studio 1A at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 24 and at the Mohawk later that night.
