Landlady: “Girl”

Just a quick rundown of Adam Schatz’s musical commitments would make even the hardiest veteran tired: there’s his work with Man Man, Sleigh Bells, Those Darlins, and more; he’s a jazz concert promoter by day; and he leads up Landlady on the side. Schatz is truly putting his NYU music degree to good use. His various bands cover wide stylistic ground, from psychedelic soul and free jazz to Afrobeat and whatever Man Man is.

Landlady allows Schatz to truly stretch out. The Brooklyn outfit is interesting mix of R&B and indie rock; I can hear traces of the Dirty Projectors and TV On The Radio in their sound. Fellow KUTX host Rick McNulty hit the nail on the head when he compared them to Pavement–which is one of Schatz’s favorite bands–during their recent Studio 1A performance. Today’s song of the day, “Girl,” comes from this live set, and it shows off the many sides of Landlady and its tireless frontman.
