This week, the Song of the Day features ACL Fest 2017 artists.
Nick Hakim makes funk music, but it’s more for the mind and heart than for the dancefloor. Like a lot of artists these days, he largely recorded Green Twins, his debut album, all by his lonesome, and it lends the record a real interior presence. Songs crawl and ooze, carried forward by Hakim’s incredibly moving voice and burned-out production choices. “Roller Skates” feels like a slow spin on the rink, taken early in the morning or late at night. But the cloudiness can’t mask everything: “Will you forgive me although I’ve forsaken / All of you?” he wonders. It may sound shadowy, but this song wears its heart on its ragged sleeves.
