Nina Diaz: “Down” (Live In Studio 1A)

Girl In A Coma frontwoman (and KUTX Artist of the Month) Nina Diaz has done a lot of living and battled a lot of demons in just two decades. Diaz recently went public about her struggles with alcoholism and drug use, noting the process of becoming sober and living as a “functioning addict” as the core of her debut solo album, The Beat Is Dead.

Diaz’s solo sound–which she showed off live in our Studio 1A this week–has all the ’80s underground homage you could want with dynamic and haunting vocals set right at center stage. “Down” is dark and catchy, its electric guitars and vintage synths ripping it up like leather jackets and acid-wash jeans. Most of the lyrics are out-of-sync with the music, allowing the music to act as a backdrop for Diaz’s confessions, self-empowering affirmations, and still-burning questions. A song as raw and full of emotion as it is loud.

Nina Diaz’s new record, The Beat is Dead, is out Friday, October 28th via Cosmica Records. Nina Diaz plays tonight at 3Ten at ACL Live.
