Sophia Warren: “Grin”

Blu Yonki

21-year-old Austinite Sophia Warren already has one EP and a major label record deal under her belt. Her alt-pop debut EP Bloodstone was a bold output of exploring the external: relationships, life, and things happening around her. Now, her sophomore EP Adesso goes inward, the High Priestess to Bloodstone’s Magician.

On Adesso, Warren narrates the pangs of personal and professional development, and as anyone who’s been through or currently experiencing their twenties knows, there’s a lot to unpack, and year-to-year, you stand to grow exponentially, shedding layers and layers and not recognizing the lesser version of yourself you’ve left behind.

“Grin” acutely explores Warren’s feeling of imposter syndrome with her young, warranted success. Working with producer Chris Coady, who touts Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House, and TV On the Radio on his resume, Warren’s imposter syndrome and the drowning noise in her head bleeds through the music, especially having a low-key fuzzed-out guitar laying the foundation while the rest of the song whirls around it.
