Sweet Spirit: “Rebel Rebel”

It’s a simple fact: Sweet Spirit is a fantastic band. What started out as a side project for A Giant Dog’s Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen has blossomed into one of the best groups in Austin. I’ve caught them live half-a-dozen times now, and each time Sweet Spirit seems to grow into its soul-meets-punk sound.

The group’s debut album Cokomo–out October 16 via Nine Mile Records–is electric from start to finish. With her powerhouse voice, Ellis is the obvious focus, but the rest of the band delivers on tracks like “Rebel Rebel.” Mariachi horns and a vocal round courtesy of bassist Jon Fichter add extra spice to the song’s rousing power pop. And to sweeten the dish, the song comes with some wry advice: “Youth is a waste / get some lines on your face.” Download the song below, and be sure to catch Sweet Spirit at Jo’s Coffee on South Congress tomorrow for the V To Shining V benefit show.
