Texas Never Whispers has a Pavement-nodding name, but the Austin band is built of sturdier construction than its slacker forbear. Singer/guitarist Tim Regan first honed his songwriting with local indie poppers Oh No Oh My, and Texas Never Whispers allows him to show off his power-pop muscle. On “This Is Your Life,” Sweet Spirit and A Giant Dog tour-de-force Sabrina Ellis plays a back-and-forth with Regan over a chugging, candy-coated beat. The ringing power chords and harmonies mine a similar magic to Cheap Trick’s “Surrender”: a life-affirming epiphany, but on a rock-and-roll scale.
