Austin’s TV Wonder are new on the scene, but the quartet’s members are seasoned veterans of Austin’s stages. Led by Max Aranson who, like many Austin musicians, was in several projects, and, also like many Austin musicians, grew weary of that grind, so he ditched them to start his own project. Slowly, the band filled out to a quartet, and the rest brings us to today.
Last week they released their debut EP Hat Day, a lively four-song romp reveling in fun indie pop with thoughtful, humorous lyrics like, “a hat won’t fix your life, but it comes with a cool design.” The title track is as fun as the title implies, a song that would be just at home on a cool kids show like Yo Gabba Gabba or in a Red River club. But the silliness of the song’s lyrics don’t detract from their really tight, layered songwriting. Indie pop? More like indie bop!
TV Wonder plays tomorrow night at Celis Brewing, but if you’re listening from a little farther south, they have a show tonight at the Porch in San Marcos. That’s two opportunities to sport that fedora with safari flaps.
Hat Day is out now.
