Valerie June: “Astral Plane”

This week, the Song of the Day features ACL Fest 2017 artists.

Years ago, Memphis’ Valerie June told NPR that’s she’s long been drawn to “perfectly imperfect” voices. Her own voice fits in that category, but it’s perfectly suited to her music. June is a master at distilling a lot of distinctly American influences–blues, country, gospel–and making them her own.

On her breakthrough 2013 album, June was Pushin’ Against A Stone, but this year’s The Order Of Time is (understandably) more expansive. “Astral Plane” is clothed in religious and cosmic overtones, but the message is distinctly earthy: the power is within you. June’s unconventional voice is testament to that faith.

“Astral Plane” appears on The Order Of Time, out now.
