Writer and visual artist Ari Honarvar hopes to build human connections across cultures through the art of famed 13th century Persian poet Rumi. Since growing up in Shiraz, Iran and learning Persian calligraphy, Honarvar has long had a passion for Rumi’s work. Now part of the nonprofit Musical Ambassador of Peace, Honarvar started the Drop Poems Not Bombs project as a response to rising diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States. In the project, American artists participate by learning a verse of Rumi’s poetry in Farsi and performing it with their music.

Honarvar dropped by Studio 1A to perform Rumi poems in English and Farsi set to musical accompaniments. She was joined by Lance Harris on the tongued drum and Austin Americana duo  Avalee, composed of Stacia Woods on octave mandolin and Vicki Wolf on accordion

Honarvar will be hosting a live poetry event on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. that will feature a drum circle and dance party.
