With all the screens, tweets, and netflixing, an opera company may seem like an anachronism among the distractions of modernity. Despite this, long-time Austin resident, professional opera singer, and opera director Liz Cass founded LOLA, or Local Opera Local Artists in the summer of 2014. Since its launch, LOLA has been looking towards the future of opera, engaging those who are already fans, and recruiting neophytes with their fresh takes on classic operas. Furthermore, LOLA has been involved in Austin community, donating surplus funds from the ticket sales of their sold out productions to local non-profits.
LOLA is performing their second production of La Femme Bohème, an all female version of Puccini’s classic La Bohème this month at the North Door. You can see the performance on February 12th and 13th at 7:30 and on February 14th at 3:00. Also check out their studio 1A performance at the bottom of the page. If you’re suspicious you won’t be able to relate to the characters from the 1896 libretto, remind yourself that there’s never anything new under the the sun–particularly love, loss, and hipsters.
The Studio 1A performance included:
Musical Director/pianist – Chuck Dillard
Rodolfo, soprano – Emily Breedlove
Marcello, mezzo – Liz Cass
Mimi, soprano – Julia Taylor
Stage Director/Artistic Producer – Rebecca Herman
Executive Producer – Liz Cass
