Ones To Watch: The Nude Party

All this week, KUTX profiles the Ones To Watch—seven must-see artists at SXSW 2019. Hosted by Jody Denberg/produced by Art Levy. Hear an audio version of this at the bottom of the page.

The Nude Party got its name fairly easily. The band members started out playing parties in their, yes, birthday suits. And the music follows suit: it’s fun, funny, and familiar. There are a lot of ’60s echoes, but with a sense of humor instead of cultish devotion. You can hear a Dylan-esque sneer in “Chevrolet Van,” a country road-tripping song as done by a bunch of garage rockers.

The group originally formed at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina before relocating to the Catskills region of New York. The six members still all live together, and that kind of tight-knit bond can easily be heard on the group’s self-titled debut, which came out last year. This is rowdy, sing-along music, perfect for SXSW.
