Long before Shakey Graves was selling out theaters around the world, Alejandro Rose-Garcia had spent time in New York and L.A. before making his way back to to his hometown. The Austin music scene looked a lot different than he remembered.
The Hole in the Wall, though? Still there — “like a rock in the river.”
He landed a happy-hour slot and slowly went from playing to one guy with his back turned…to filling the room, then rooms a whole lot bigger than this one.
Now Shakey is back at the Hole for The Hole Story, with a wild tale of the nearly century-old Gibson archtop he swears is haunted and credits with shaping some of the songs that first defined Shakey Graves. How he got it involves a gig, a stranger and a few questionable decisions.
Performing songs from his latest album, Fondness, Etc., Shakey traces some of the people, places and strange turns that have followed him from those early Austin shows to where he is today.
