Tom Waits turns 74 TODAY! His dad was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas, but young Tom was born and raised in Whittier, California, where he learned to play the bugle, guitar and the ukelele before heading to San Diego where he was “kind of an amateur juvenile delinquent” and where discovered Bob Dylan and the 1950s Beat generation.
