Steely Dan’s Lost Schlitz Beer Jingle

Maile Carballo / KUTX

Each week during Left of the Dial, KUTX Music Director, Rick McNulty shares the best song he heard this week.

Long ago, Steely Dan was another band trying to make ends meet. In their early days, they tried many avenues from attempts to peddle songs to the Brill Building to film soundtracks like You’ve Got to Walk It Like You Talk It or You’ll Lose That Beat. Regarding the latter, Walter Becker candidly admitted, “We did it for the money” and it’s within reason to assume that was the case for this long-lost and unreleased jingle they wrote for Schlitz beer.

Hey, there’s no shame in that–everyone’s gotta eat. And for what it’s worth, this is a damn good jingle.

“You will not hear a better beer jingle in your life. It won’t make Schlitz taste any better, but it will make it go down smoother.”
