What’s Up with SXSW and Immigration

SXSW was met with unexpected controversy late last week after Told Slant’s Felix Walworth tweeted his decision to cancel the band’s SXSW performance over language in their artist contract detailing the repercussions of doing anything un-related to SXSW during the festival. The language involved everything from revoking an artist’s official status to reporting the artist to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As expected, Walworth’s tweet literally caused global backlash as other foreign artists began dropping out, and stateside groups signed a petition urging the festival to amend its regulations. SXSW’s response was thorough, stating their disdain for President Trump’s travel ban and the proposed SB6, and that the festival has never once reported any artist or group to any immigration authorities. Furthermore, SXSW says that the now-controversial language has been in their contract since 2013, but they will be revisiting and amending their rules for 2018 on.

Yes, the former Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio singer will be the first musician to ever headline a world tour posthumously via a hologram. Ronnie James Dio will be fronting the Dio Disciples, a group that features former Dio members with three additional singers, but part of each performance will be fronted by Dio himself.
