In her latest video, Mélat presents the listener with a stunning tribute to the golden age of jazz as she performs “The Lesson.” (a previous KUTX Song of the Day) Set in Austin’s newest jazz venue, Monk’s Jazz Club, the video recreates a nightclub intimacy. You’re right in the front row, under the spell of Mélat’s silken voice.
Influenced both by Ella Fitzgerald’s crooning and SZA’s pop sensibilities, “The Lesson” is a testament to the timelessness of love songs, blending the nostalgic imagery of an era long gone with the melodies of today. Starting off as a monochromatic slow jam, relaxed and romantic, the video begins with light piano filling the air before Mélat takes the stage. As the music progresses, Mélat’s emotions come flooding out, and a Technicolor dream unfolds, complete with gospel harmonies and a standing ovation. By the video’s end, the crowd is singing along, declaring alongside a heavenly choir, “Love will come rushing in / No, you don’t chase love.”
