Be Dope

A simple mantra. But it’s motivated Shxwnfresh from day one.

AMM April 4 2024

Shxwnfresh and Deezie Brown tonight at The Pershing, with Codee, and _Newrouge.

This one’s for the dreamers. Shxwnfresh can testify.

The Baton Rouge native (songwriter DeShawn Morrison) takes his rap/hip-hop/R&B artistry to another level with an in-depth exploration of emotions, and his unwavering commitment to his craft. And it all began with his love of poetry, a specific language of expression that helped him overcome obstacles. As he explained in an interview with William Whitworth of Eterna Lavender, “I faced hardships in breaking into the media scene, striving to be heard and recognized as an artist. But stuck with my mantra guiding me through these challenges was simple yet powerful: ‘Be dope.'”

KUTX Artist of the Month alum Deezie Brown wields the power of a potent 5TH WHEEL FAIRYTALE, born of a fascination with rapping and melodies while growing up in Bastrop. Creating mixtapes also gave Brown some creative leeway when he discovered it was possible to add his own vocals to his mixes on his boombox. “This was the time when instrumental CDs were kind of a thing as well,” Brown told Jack Anderson in an interview. “And I asked for another boombox, ‘cause what I wanted to do was play the music from one boombox and record it onto the tape through the small mic on the tape player. Once I figured that out and I figured I could get my vocals into the tape and I can get the music into the tape, I’d say, ‘I’m this close to making a song,’ not knowing anything about music at the time.  But that’s how I started…”

Deezie Brown
