Be Remembered

You heard it on today’s Austin Music Minute: James McMurtry doesn’t really need an AMM mention, but…your humble AMM host wanted to make him one, anyway. So, hats off to the man who doesn’t shy away from putting tales of journeys to hell and back into his songs. He is blunt, concise, and on fire. No stuttering, no small talk. His tales summon powerful emotions that emerge within the listener drinking in his words. This isn’t about “keeping it real”; this is real.

McMurtry’s brilliant, pithy storytelling is as sharp and fresh as ever on Complicated Game, his first studio album in six years. It also moves into a different sonic direction with frenetic energy bursts and driven beats that are a perfect match for some of the best lyrics you’ll ever hear (just give a listen to the gritty “How’m I Gonna Find You Now”). This is a songwriter who leaves other songwriters in awe.

Do yourself a favor. Check out James McMurtry tonight at The Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress Ave. He goes on at midnight. He’s a badass. So very recommended.
