Change of Heart

Sure, you can credit the ‘shrooms for Margo Price‘s most inspired songwriting moments on her latest LP Strays, if you like. Price and husband Jeremy Ivey wrote the new album while trippin’ during a trip in South Carolina, the ideas flowing like waterfalls after a torrential downpour.

But this songwriting marks the arrival of a different energy from Price, as someone sagely observing life’s upheavals and changes from an enlightened P.O.V., thanks to personal experience and an empathetic soul. It’s also incredible to hear Price’s band, the same band that’s been with her since before Midwest Farmer’s Daughter (2016, via Third Man Records), expanding upon a sound they built together, as Price collaborates with Sharon Van Etten, Lucius, and guitarist Mike Campbell (The Heartbreakers) to push her creativity further. She puts it this way: “You get stuck in the same patterns of thinking, the same loops of addiction. But there comes a point where you just have to say, ‘I’m going to be here, I’m going to enjoy it, and I’m not going to put so much stock into checking the boxes for everyone else.’ I feel more mature in the way that I write now, I’m on more than just a search for large crowds and accolades. I’m trying to find what my soul needs.”
