Dig It!

If The Ugly Beats happen to be the subject of conversation, chances are you’ll bring up a whole bunch of music, winding through the Beats’ own influences to several other ’60s garage rockers and freakbeat fiends from your list of top favorites.

Makes sense. The Ugly Beats are music lovers. It’s an obsession right up there with DJ Sue Purr and the Fuzz Club. It’s the vibe Scott Gardner dishes out every Saturday night on KOOP‘s Stronger Than Dirt. It’s like looking up any of the The Ugly Beats’ albums and finding yourself going down the Get Hip Recordings rabbit hole of awesomeness. Seriously. Guitarist/vocalist Joe Emery is the reason your AMM host got to meet Roky Erickson some years ago and wound up diving into The 13th Floor Elevators all over again.

This is also why the band sounds so damn tight. That, and playing together for twenty years might also have something to do with it. They have countless loyal fans in Austin and all over the world. Speaking of which, they just returned from their recent Spain tour and are ready for a homecoming show tonight, Monday June 12, at The 13th Floor on Red River. They’re joined by KUTX Artist of the Month alum Je’Texas, and Austin-based trio The Stayres. Doors at 7 p.m.

*You can find today’s AMM featured track “Throw Me A Line” on The Ugly Beats’ 2014 LP Brand New Day.
