Today’s Austin Music Minute has a connection to the KUTX Artist of the Month.
One summer following a breakup, songwriter Julia Lucille had moved into an airstream on Moon Phase Ranch in Dripping Springs. She needed time on her own to heal and, since there would be little left to do in the somewhat isolated locale, she concentrated on her music. The ranch also happens to be the location of Dandy Sounds, the recording studio of Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski, the duo known as Cross Record. Julia had met Cross and Duszynski before moving to Moon Phase, and was thrilled with the opportunity of working on her new album with them. During that time, she also created several home recordings independently, each coinciding with different lunar phases – a new recording for every new moon. “I felt like I was going through meaning-withdrawal,” Lucille says. “I wanted to honor nature, honor cycles, honor the magic I knew existed though I felt I couldn’t access it at that time.”
These beautiful stripped-down musical pieces became the material for Bedroom Tapes, Vol. 1 (Punctum Records), and they’ll be available at Lucille’s tape release show tonight at Cheer Up Charlie’s, 901 Red River. The bill includes performances by NYC band Mega Bog, Pony Boy & The Horsegirls, and AMA. Doors open at 9 p.m.
