The initial buzz around Hot Flash Heat Wave began with their 2015 debut Neapolitan – especially as the garage-y/surf-y off-center gem “Gutter Girl” made the rounds. From that point, their evolution continued on its elaborate path of endless influences. On their third LP Sportswear, the San Francisco-based trio joyfully flows through a more synth-centered mesh of early and mid-’80s new wave, post-punk, and – your AMM host is damn giddy over this – a few gloomy goth elements in there for good measure.
Hot Flash Heat Wave is in Austin for a show tonight, Thursday April 21, at Empire Control Room on E. 7th. The line-up includes Oakland band Small Crush, and Portland, OR synth-pop outfit Reptaliens. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show kicks off at 9 p.m.
