Austin-based artist (by way of Utah) June Bennion crafts folk-influenced dream pop with their project Junerise, and this week marks the release of their new single “Rising Sun”, placing hope where despair could easily possess the mind. “‘Rising Sun’ was one of the first songs I wrote working a construction job in Utah, dreaming of an escape to Austin, TX, while battling with my own mental health struggles with being in the closet,” Bennion recalls. “Watching the sun rise and set reminded me that no matter how dark things got, there was always the promise of light if I could just hold on. Especially now, I hope this song can offer trans youth a sense of home—and a place to imagine something better on the horizon.”
Junerise’s single release show is this Wednesday night on Mohawk’s indoor stage. The all-local line-up features artist Angela Greco’s Days of Summer, and post-punk shoegaze outfit Paper Sister. Doors at 7 p.m.
