A couple of badass songwriters play every Wednesday at The Continental Club. Yes, they’re related.
KUTX and the Austin Music Minute invite you to join the city-wide celebration of Love Austin Music Month. Celebrating Austin music is something we do all year round, but this month brings a little extra love to the incredible, wide-spanning talent of Austin-based artists.
For some, it began with True Believers (or the Skunks if you’re hardcore). Still, it was Jon Dee Graham‘s solo work that got a lot of fans connected to his understated but incredible talent. The songs connect to the soul in ways you didn’t think possible, while experiencing the music live is another game-changer. The Great Battle (2004) and Summerland (1999) are good starting points, Only Dead For a Little While (2023) is a damn treasure, but your AMM host is forever hooked on Hooray for the Moon (2002) – specifically “Laredo (Small Dark Something)” right into “The Huisache Tree.”
It was a natural thing for William Harries Graham to gravitate toward music himself, watching his dad play and being surrounded by music throughout his own life. These formative years shaped an impressive songwriter in his own right. From the moment rock/folk soundscape Foreign Fields (2015) was released into the wild, it was apparent William was only scratching the surface of his distinctive style. JAKES (2019), which some consider the official WHG debut, remains a big fan favorite; the 2021 EPs St. Claire and Plainfield Tapes are required listening during the golden hours, while the heartbreaking beauty of There Are Only Endings (2023) will crush your soul. Then Annie’s House (2024) arrives to continue shaking up expectations with poetic revelation.
If you haven’t done so by now, it’s time to treat yourself to this longstanding residency at The Continental Club. William Harries Graham performs tonight at 9:30 p.m., followed by Jon Dee Graham at around 10:30 p.m.. After that, it’s boot gaze/barn rock/cocktail folk/hillbilly disco outfit The Light Aluminum at midnight.
